Summary

Which is more important in K12 schools, elevating student achievement, creating safe and healthy learning spaces, or reducing operational and maintenance costs? We believe they are equally important, and a balance of each priority is achievable through sound educational planning techniques and strategies. Every K12 school project has a site, a physical learning environment, a curriculum, and a financial impact within its community. Often there is a debate as to which of these factors is more important; and which to finance. We will offer insight on how well planned, sustainable, schools can simultaneously enhance the educational outcomes, achieve high performance (zero-net-energy) measures, create safe spaces, and reduce O&M costs. We will share studies that demonstrate students achieve higher cognitive scores in safe and sustainable learning environments. We will demonstrate how school planning has evolved past integrating sustainability into a learning environment, and has become a balanced process where educational aspects enhance sustainability strategies and vice-versa. The benefit is a physical school presence that reduces the impact on its community in both financial and ecological measures; while increasing academic outcomes.
